Our Leadership
Ballymoney Church of God
The Ballymoney Church of God congregation was formed in 1946 when a small group of people met in the home of the late William Clarke at Dungorberry.
Pastor Jonathan Payne
Pastor Jonathan is a modern day visionary and a dynamic man of God. He is very skilled in business management and administration, as well as being an anointed leader and gifted speaker.
More About Pastor Jonathan
All of these skills together have enabled him to spearhead the purchasing and development of a further 2 ½ acres of land on behalf of the church fellowship.
From the acquisition of land to the establishment of the highly successful Happy Days Community Childcare Centre, Pastor Jonathan has followed the vision God has shown him for Ballymoney Church of God.
Born in Newtownards in 1960 to Doris and Russ Payne, he was the third son in a family of four and had a happy childhood. He attended Regent House Grammar School and he regularly attended the local Methodist Church playing an active part in the Youth Fellowship.
It was actually in the Methodist Church at the age of eighteen that Pastor Jonathan gave his life to the Lord.
In his early twenties, after moving to the Coleraine area, he was voted on to the local church board as a congregational representative of Coleraine Methodist Church where he was also appointed as a youth leader.
He spent thirteen years working in a travel agency before setting up his own very successful Hallmark Card Shop and Tea Shop businesses.
Although at this time his wife Yvonne was chronically ill, God prospered and blessed him.
He was elected President of Ballymoney Chamber of Commerce for a term of four and a half years and still to this day keeps a keen interest in the Business affairs of Ballymoney Town Centre.
Life began to change for him as restoration and healing came to Jonathan’s home and the Lord moved by the power of His Holy Spirit on his life. With much prayer and deep conviction he took a giant leap of faith selling his businesses and stepping into a brand new season for both himself and Yvonne.
Pastor Jonathan to this day will tell you that he has never looked back or regretted his decision even though his days are often busy and hectic!
No longer can he just turn the key in a shop door and go home to relax, as Pastoral care is a 24/7, lifelong calling of which he thoroughly enjoys.
Pastor Jonathan is an eloquent preacher and with his business background is also a tremendous asset to the day to day running of a large church. He has a zeal and a talent for management and is a brilliant organiser and motivator of people.
When he ‘pictures’ Ballymoney Church of God he sees a vibrant, successful, Spirit-filled place where people are drawn because of the presence of God.
His love for The Lord and the congregation are evident in all he says and does and his greatest ambition in life is to no longer be the best businessman, but to be the best Pastor he can be for God’s Glory.
He firmly believes that there are great days in store for Ballymoney Church of God as both Pastors and People continue to build something eternal for God’s Kingdom.
“Unless the Lord builds the house, they labour in vain who build it.”
Psalms 127:1
Pastor Yvonne Payne
Pastor Yvonne is an anointed woman of God with a heart for people and a ministry to serve the lost and broken of society.
More About Pastor Yvonne
]Having suffered with a life impacting disease for 18 years, God miraculously healed her and she is now giving her all to impact the lives of others, through the healing power of the Gospel. She is a gifted leader and speaker as well as a loving Pastor who continues to see lives changed through her God given ministries.
Born in 1965 to Pastor and Mrs Edward Taylor, she is actually a third generation preacher on her Father’s side! She grew up in the town of Ballymoney and attended the local schools.
Pastor Yvonne was raised in Ballymoney Church of God and all her life she has played an active role in church activities. Her teenage years were spent singing in various gospel groups and she was also an accomplished soloist.
As a young girl she played key roles in youth fellowship groups and committees and even from an early age her teachers often remarked on her excellent leadership and communication skills!
She married her husband Jonathan Payne in May 1985, and just before their wedding day, she contracted viral meningitis. From that point onwards, for the next eighteen years, she suffered from chronic M.E. and a heart condition. Life was to change dramatically for this young couple. However, through those years of great testing, isolation and struggle they drew close to the Lord as God shaped and moulded their lives.
Pastor Yvonne vividly remembers the day she made a promise to the Lord that if He would heal and restore her life she would do whatever He asked of her. Little did she know that God’s sovereign plan was now unfolding for both her and Jonathan, as God prepared them for their ministry in Pastoral care. In fact within two years of that promise The Lord began to move miraculously in her body as well as her spirit, restoring her to full health and strength.
On 4th September 2005 an overflowing congregation celebrated the induction of Pastor Jonathan and Pastor Yvonne into full-time ministry.
She is an eloquent speaker who brings the message of Christ in her own vibrant and unique way.
She has travelled all over the U.K. and as far away as Sweden, preaching the Gospel message and praying for those in need.
She has witnessed the transformation and restoration of many lives both young and old. In fact people of all age groups have commented on how much she has impacted them through countless hours of counselling and prayer.
This woman of God has a heart and passion for people. Her greatest desire is that Ballymoney Church of God be known as a House of Healing and a place where God’s redemptive power is found and received.
She knows what it is like to be imprisoned by circumstances beyond her control. She understands how it feels to be vulnerable and frightened, but she is also living proof of God’s faithfulness and healing power.
As you can imagine with any large congregation she is kept busy on a daily basis, but always enjoys the challenge of pastoral care.
Pastor Yvonne is excited about the future and all that the Lord has in store both for the congregation of Ballymoney Church of God and for the wider community.
Exciting days ahead!
“I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh…”
Joel 2:28
Pastor Edward George Taylor
(1933-2019)
Pastor Edward George Taylor must surely be classed as one of God’s General’s for North Antrim and Northern Ireland.
More About Pastor Edward George Taylor
Gifted and anointed to preach, teach, pastor, evangelise and to show forth the love of Christ, God has used this man to transform hundreds of lives and establish one of the greatest community inclusive churches in the area. Following a serious health issue in September 2015 Pastor Taylor had taken the decision to step back from day to day pastoring and thus fulfil the role of Pastor Emeritus (Latin; meaning Old Soldier).
Nevertheless he always took a very keen interest in the day to day running of Ballymoney Church of God with all its exciting projects and events.
Born in West Belfast in 1933 to Arthur and Edith Taylor, he grew up amidst the bombing campaign of World War two. He attended the Church of God in East Belfast now called Glenmachan and he grew up in that church atmosphere playing an active role in the activities of that day e.g. organising open-airs, church outings and youth fellowships. This was to stand him in good stead for future years.
In the secular field Pastor Taylor studied engineering at Belfast College and also attained a diploma in journalism which was to prove invaluable in the years to come.
At the age of twenty-one he travelled to Winchester City, England, to pioneer a church there before travelling up north to Tyneside to assist in the Church at Gateshead. At the age of twenty three he headed back home to Ulster to help Pastor James Connolly conduct evangelistic crusades and open-airs in the town of Ballymoney, which were a tremendous success.
It was in December 1956 that he was offered the pastorate of a large, established church in Canada, but through much prayer and waiting on God he decided to stay in Northern Ireland. As God’s Sovereign Will began to unfold in this young man’s life, he was inducted as Pastor of Ballymoney Church of God. This was a decision he never regretted and over the decades proved that Ballymoney was God’s will for him. The fledgling congregation grew from a handful to hundreds under his wise leadership and anointed ministry.
In 1960 he married Flora Templeton, an accomplished pianist and soloist, and they went on to have two children, Michael and Yvonne. Michael is married to Nathalie and Pastor Taylor was always very proud of his two grandchildren Talitha and Yan. His daughter Yvonne is married to Jonathan who are now both senior ministers in the church fellowship.
In over sixty years of ministry, with his wife’s tireless support, he witnessed the blessing of God over the church as he undertook to lead four major building programmes. What we see today is a beautiful sanctuary, expansive youth halls, modern kitchens, offices, caretaker’s flat and recreational and committee rooms that are testament to a loyal and faithful congregation under his wise leadership. In fact, he pastored families to fifth generation, which very few ministers achieve in life.
In his years in ministry he travelled on all five continents, preaching at large international conferences and local churches, lecturing at bible colleges and conducting pastoral seminars, but his heart always lay in Ballymoney Church of God.
In 1990 his fellow ministers publicly presented him with a signed plaque, recognising him as a man of great integrity, a God inspired motivator and a true teacher of the Word. It concluded with the words: ‘your ministerial brethren hold you in the highest regard because of your wisdom, dependability, kindness and solid faith, which constantly inspires us all’. What an accolade and tribute to this man’s life’s work and character!
Even though he was severely limited due to his stroke, in his final five years of life Pastor Taylor continued to have a heart for the hurting, a compassion for the distressed and a hunger to bring the hope of Christ to the lost.
He held in his heart for over sixty years the God given Vision, never wavering or faltering from it! Spiritually he continued to press forward to even greater days for Ballymoney Church of God under the careful, strong leadership of Senior Ministers; Pastors Jonathan and Yvonne Payne.
When he was shown the plans for the new Sanctuary he declared “this is the Lord’s doing and it’s marvellous in our eyes!” Then he raised his hand and said “The Glory of this latter house shall be greater than the former!”
Sadly, Pastor Taylor went home to be with the Lord on the 15th July 2019. His homecoming service was one of celebration and thanksgiving in true Pentecostal style! Just how he wanted it!
Family and church family miss him so much but rejoice in the hope that one day we shall see him again.
The Apostle Paul sums up Pastor Taylor’s life beautifully.
“I have fought a good fight
I have finished my course
I have kept the faith”
2 Timothy 4:7
“This is the Lord’s doing; it is marvellous in our eyes.”
Psalm 118:23
For Eighty years the Church has faithfully served it’s local community well, from evangelistic Tent Crusades to Cherish a Child projects.
People, young and old, from all walks of life, have over the years settled in our fellowship. It is testament to the ministry of Ballymoney Church of God that, to date, five generations within several families have chosen to faithfully settle and serve God.
It was prophesied in the early days that we would be a ‘lighthouse, a beacon on a hill in the Town of Ballymoney and beyond’. This has surely come to pass and we rejoice in our spiritual heritage!
